Why are spa manufacturers using acrylic?
In general, there are two main materials used by manufacturers for the shell surfaces of spas, OAS and acrylic. The spa shell is a very important factor to consider when choosing a hot tub, as unlike other part it is not replaceable. Therefore the decision of which shell to have needs to be considered carefully at time of purchase. Although Acrylic is the more expensive of the two materials, acrylic has many advantages for its use and comes in a wide variety of colours and styles.
Acrylic has a smooth glossy finish, which is easy to clean and prevents dirt from accumulating and resists staining from chemicals. It also offers good impact resistance and will take a fair amount of usage. Acrylic has UV protection, which protects the surface from the suns rays.
The quality of a shell that is manufactured using acrylic is based on the quality and thickness of the fibreglass and the quality of the manufacturing process. The thicker the layer of fibreglass the better the quality. Check with your spas retailer on how your hot tubs shell has been manufactured.
